Rebuilding Pakistan Through Technology – The Friday Times

In a bid to help rebuild Pakistan from the after-effects of the catastrophic floods, xWave, Pakistan’s first technology-driven flood relief initiative is all set to create long-term, sustainable impact for Pakistan’s flood affectees.

Salahuddin Khawaja, the founder of Hypermode (an NY-based crypto consulting firm) and the digital agency, Decklaration, is the force behind xWave, who previously helped build 3,000 shelters after the catastrophic 2005 Kashmir earthquake.
Having spent 20 years on Wall Street, focused on shepherding change through Digital Transformation, Salahuddin recently organised a community effort of 10+ different organisations to launch xWave with the goal of bringing a tech-based approach to disaster relief.
xWave plans to galvanise change by providing sustainable housing, digital literacy and digital employment to our flood-affected communities. This tech-based model is aimed at creating exponential impact that will give those impacted by the floods, long-term, sustainable living. Through xWave, Salahuddin’s goal is to help 300 families create an economic impact of $14 Million over 10 years.
Previously with Deloitte, JP Morgan and Bank of America, Salahuddin has consistently given back to Pakistan throughout the arc of his career.
Recognising the magnitude of the education crisis in Pakistan, he founded Khud (www.khud.org) and the Institute of Emerging Careers (www.iec.org.pk). He believes that education technology, coupled with self-learning, is the 21st-century solution to help Pakistan take giant strides on the economic growth front.

“Countries that succeed implement systems where different stakeholders have different responsibilities – each has a pivotal role to play and if that can happen, Pakistan will be able to rely on institutions to support causes like xWave instead of citizens. But in the absence of a system, citizens like myself have to step up and fill in the gaps to try to do whatever they can,” states Salahuddin.
“Over the past 20 years technology has played a major role in economic improvement and in the next two decades it’s going to play an even bigger role in economic improvement! So how do we bet on technology? India has built big companies with millions of employees, whereas our biggest software company has only 5,000 employees – so this begs the question, how do we take a progressive view on technology primarily with how the revolution’s going from Web2 to Web3. With xWave, we’re going to help 300 families with shelter and then help an adult member of the family learn digital literacy (graphic design, video editing, maybe even programming) and get them employed within the digital space through freelancing careers where they can earn in dollars.”
xWave’s first event will be held at COLABS, Pakistan’s fastest growing, flexible workspace, on Monday, the 26th of September, at 5:30pm, in Gulberg, Lahore.
